Matthijs Fockens wins the Bolk prize!

9-01-2025

We are delighted to announce that former PhD candidate, Dr. Matthijs Fockens, has been awarded the prestigious Bolk prize at the congress of the Dutch Anatomical Society (NAV). This honor recognizes his doctoral research on ‘Anomalies of the Larynx and Trachea: Developmental Aspects and Treatment Considerations‘.

Dr. Fockens’ thesis provides significant insights into the embryonic and fetal development of the larynx and trachea, enhancing our understanding of congenital anomalies in these structures. His work proposes a novel theory on the etiology of complete tracheal ring deformity, suggesting a centripetal growth pattern of tracheal cartilage during embryonic development. This challenges the traditionally accepted craniocaudal growth gradient and offers a potential explanation for the prevalence of complete tracheal ring in the middle third of the trachea.

In addition to developmental insights, Dr. Fockens has contributed to refining treatment options for laryngeal and tracheal anomalies. His research includes a modified surgical technique for aortopexy in tracheobronchomalacia (DOI), and endoscopic cauterization and sclerotherapy for airway obstruction by a third branchial pouch sinus (DOI), aiming to improve outcomes in children suffering from this condition.

Dr. Fockens defended his dissertation on April 17, 2024, under the supervision of Prof. Dikkers, with co-supervisors Dr. de Bakker and Dr. Hoekstra.

The Bolk prize is awarded annually by the Dutch Anatomical Society to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of anatomy. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Fockens and his research team for this well-deserved recognition and thanks to the NAV, with in particular the Bolk jury led by dr. Janniko Georgiadis, for the honour of receiving the award for our research.
