Reflections on the Micro-CT Symposium in Woluwe
9-01-2025
On December 12th, 2024, the annual Micro-CT Symposium brought together researchers, clinicians, and industry representatives in Woluwe, Belgium. Hosted by Prof. Greet Kerckhofs and Dr. Gregory Pyka of the ContrasT team, the event focused on the clinical and research potential of 3D X-ray-based histology.
The keynote lecture by Prof. Janne Mäkelä from the University of Eastern Finland was a highlight of the symposium. Titled “New Generation Spectral Computed Tomography and Nano Contrast Media for Osteoarthritis,” the presentation explored the use of spectral CT and nano contrast agents for the early detection of cartilage injuries. Prof. Mäkelä’s insights into advanced imaging techniques and their potential for tracking osteoarthritis progression underscored the transformative role of imaging technologies in addressing complex medical challenges.
The scientific program included a joint presentation by Daniel Docter, PhD candidate in our team, and Dr. Bernadette de Bakker, showcasing how Micro-CT provides detailed 3D histological insights. Their work underlined the technology’s value in bridging traditional histology and clinical imaging, offering applications for diagnostics, treatment planning, and understanding tissue pathology (See for examples: DOI, DOI).
A guided lab tour by Dr. Pyka gave participants a firsthand look at the Nanotom system, highlighting its diverse applications in biological and anatomical research. The symposium was a great opportunity to interact with industry representatives, fostering collaborations essential for translating Micro-CT advancements into clinical practice.
Thanks to its organizers, the symposium reaffirmed the exciting possibilities of Micro-CT for advancing science and medicine through high-resolution 3D imaging.
